October 23, 2015 – Ithaca, NY – Advion, Inc., a leading systems and consumables developer for the life sciences industry, announces further expansion into the Chinese chemistry market.

Effective October 26, 2015, Advion will have opened direct sales and support in China with over 25 trained direct sales and support personnel. In addition, Advion will showcase all of its products at China’s largest analytical instrumentation conference, BCEIA. The event is being held October 27 – 30^th in Beijing. The 90 m² exhibit booth space will highlight the expression compact mass spectrometer (CMS) product line, Advion’s chip-based nanoelectrospray ion sources, the NanoTek microfluidic synthesis system, Plate Express TLC/MS interface as well as several mass spectrometry related accessory items.

Further solidifying the synergies between Advion and Bohui, product development continues on a significant mass spectrometry project that will greatly leverage the companies’ market capabilities in clinical applications.

August 17, 2015 – Ithaca, NY – Advion, Inc., a leading systems and consumables developer for the life sciences industry, announced during this week’s 250th American Chemical Society National Meeting & Exposition in Boston, Massachusetts the release of software for its  expression compact mass spectrometer (CMS) product line, greatly increasing ease-of-use for mass spectrometry in many chemistry applications. This software, titled CheMS, along with the release of new bundled systems configured specifically for the chemist’s workflows, enables simpler than ever lab-based mass spectrometry.

The development of the expression CMS family is focused on speeding and simplifying the chemist’s workflow by bringing the mass spectrometry analytical experience to chemistry and biochemistry laboratories. The CheMS user interface is the latest in this progression; it allows users to quickly select their desired workflow (Direct Injection, TLC/CMS, or ASAP) and type of compound they wish to analyze in just a few clicks of the mouse. The software automatically optimizes the ion source and data acquisition parameters to ensure they get the data they need. This allows the chemist to obtain optimal analytical data without needing to be an expert in mass spectrometry.

“Advion is focused on developing technology that improves user workflow and increases productivity; feedback from our customers led us to another dynamic product enhancement dramatically improving the laboratory experience,” says Simon Prosser, Vice President of Marketing.  “Mass spectrometers provide more information than nearly any other detector, but have historically seen limited use in chemistry laboratories because of their previous complexity. June 5, 2015 – Ithaca, NY – Advion, Inc., a leading systems and consumables developer for the life sciences industry, announces it has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by Bohui with an expected close date on June 30, 2015. The acquisition is strategic for both companies and will enable Advion to broaden its investments in the areas of life science, clinical, and food safety applications. Advion will continue to trade under its current name and brand, with all employees and executives remaining with the company. All three (3) operations and locations in Ithaca, NY are expected to remain unchanged into the future.

Commenting upon the acquisition, Advion’s CEO Dave Patteson stated “Our company’s business progression has been quite notable over the past three years since we launched the expression CMS line of compact mass spectrometers. June 1, 2015 – Ithaca, NY – Advion, Inc., a leading systems and consumables developer for the life sciences industry, has launched the the expression^E compact mass spectrometer (CMS).  Created specifically for global education institutions interested in providing industry-relevant, hands-on mass spectrometry experience at an affordable price point, the expression^E delivers tailored performance, versatile sample introduction systems, and a clear, easy-to-follow, complete curriculum with a lecture and video series created by Jack Henion, PhD, an expert in mass spectrometry and co-inventor of the modern ion-spray technique.

The United States is home to more than 600 undergraduate chemistry programs recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS), and many are small private institutions, creating challenging funding environments for expensive analytical equipment. Advion has not only priced the expression^E at an affordable price, but also created an academic teaching “kit” including the most desirable chemistry, biochemistry or medicinal chemistry program features: a single quadrupole mass spectrometer, computer, training, choice of interfaces, and an easy-to-follow video and lecture curriculum.

March 23, 2015 – Ithaca, NY – Advion, Inc., a leading systems and consumables developer for the life sciences industry, introduces the Plate Express^TM, a patent-pending automated software-controlled system to directly analyze thin-layer chromatography (TLC) plates and a full range of other planar surfaces by mass spectrometry.  Plate Express provides a simple, automated, software-clicked means of visually pinpointing and extracting compounds from a range of TLC plate formats into Advion’s expression^® compact mass spectrometer (CMS). The combined technique is known as TLC/CMS. Synthetic organic, natural product and peptide chemists can quickly and confidently identify analytes in complex mixtures without additional sample preparation utilizing TLC/CMS

Plate Express is controlled by Advion’s Mass Express software, vastly simplifying the process and increasing the robustness of TLC spot and planar surface analysis. A patent-pending pressure-sensing feature allows for uncommon force management to be controlled, superbly sealing around the point of interest, while extending the life of the probe, further reducing the cost of consumables. For routine and expert users alike, the software allows for methods to be developed for their plates and surfaces of choice.

“Advion developed the patent-pending Plate Express with input from chemists involved in several research areas as well as extensive review of peer-reviewed publications,” comments Simon J. The system works by placing a developed TLC plate into the device, aligning the spot of interest and clicking the Mass Express start button, then real-time data is displayed on the computer screen. Plate Express can also be used to extract samples from other surfaces, such as papers and biological tissue samples, with an array of extraction heads available, and each optimized for different applications. With many features designed specifically to extend probe life and auto-clean, the combined TLC/CMS system is ideally suited for chemistry laboratories and QA/QC.

December 1, 2014 – Ithaca, NY – Advion, Inc. announces that its TriVersa NanoMate with liquid extraction surface analysis (LESA) capability will be evaluated as part of a study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

When coupled to a mass spectrometer, the TriVersa NanoMate with LESA capability allows for automated and direct sample analysis from samples with minimal sample preparation. The user can select tissue samples around the interest area, and get real-time mass spectral data.

Dr. Nathalie Agar, Director of the Surgical Molecular Imaging Laboratory in the Department of Neurosurgery at BWH, will work with tissue preparations for biomarker analysis to guide real-time surgical margin decisions in the operating room with a comparison to alternative modern techniques as well as traditional pathology. The purpose of the study is to determine novel markers for cancer tissue, detect them using LESA and mass spectrometry, and then guide precise and accurate surgery marginal incision start and stop points. If successful, this could increase treatment success, decrease residual cancer presence and minimize unnecessary removal of healthy tissue.

According to Advion Chief Scientific Officer, Jack Henion, PhD, “This is an exciting aspect of translational research for cancer biomarkers that potentially has immediate benefit for patients undergoing cancer surgery. In the intended workflow from ‘bench-to-bedside’ (or more accurately from ‘bench-to-operation room’) a surgical decision is guided not only by standard procedures but additionally by mass spectrometry data from tissue samples obtained in real-time during the procedure.”

Pilot experiments are now underway with an initial publication targeted for early 2015.

August 6, 2014 – Ithaca, NY – Advion, Inc., a leading systems and consumables developer for the life sciences industry, announces the release of a Direct Analysis Probe for its line of expression compact mass spectrometers (CMS). With hundreds of CMS systems utilized in chemistry laboratories around the world, this latest development creates yet another important tool for chemists who need fast, simple, reliable sample analysis of liquids and solids such as reaction mixtures, food samples, natural products and tablets without the need for sample preparation.

Chemists’ assays are often driven by their need to understand reaction kinetics and composition, to decide when to quench reactions, and verify iterative and final purification fractions. Recognizing the unrivaled flexibility of the Advion CMS as a detector across many workflows, the Direct Analysis Probe delivers essential mass spectral information of compounds in less than one minute.

The new Direct Analysis Probe sample introduction, otherwise known as ASAP® (Atmospheric Solids Analysis Probe), uses a standard glass melting point capillary which is introduced into CMS system.  Chemists dip the closed end of the capillary into the sample of interest (even complex reaction mixtures) or scrape the surface of a solid, and then place the capillary into the CMS for analysis. Involatile contaminants remain on the glass capillary, while compounds of interest are identified by the CMS.
