Advion Places Compact Mass Spectrometers in Internationally Recognized University Chemistry Departments

July 1, 2015 – Ithaca, NY – Advion, Inc., a leading systems and consumables developer for the life sciences industry, announces that at the close of its 2015 fiscal year and after only 33 months on the market, the expression compact mass spectrometer (CMS) is integrated within many of the Top 10 organic and biochemistry programs (as ranked by US News and World Reports) of the United States at Berkeley, Harvard, MIT, Scripps, Princeton, Michigan and Yale as well as the Top 2 programs in the UK at Cambridge and Oxford (as ranked in The 2015 Complete University Guide).

Advion’s expression CMS was developed with academic chemistry program input, and with its over 20 years of mass spectrometry and chemistry expertise; the system was introduced less than three years ago during the American Chemical Society’s Spring National Meeting in San Diego.  Further to this accomplishment is that 15 of the top 20 USA programs use the CMS, as well as hundreds of other small academic sites for research and teaching.

“The development focus for Advion from day one has been to create a benchtop mass spectrometer that is easy-to-use, easy-to-maintain, and affordable allowing for chemistry researchers to gain industry-relevant, hands-on experience,” comments David Patteson, Advion’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are proud to deliver our promise and bring mass spectrometry to the masses.”

This announcement closely follows the recent release of Advion’s Education Bundle that includes the expression CMS, training, computer, ion source and curriculum complete with slides and video lectures for any chemistry program to easily place into their existing syllabus.

Advion’s success and standing in the academic sector is highlighted in a recent report on the single quadrupole MS market by Strategic Directions International (SDi). The report uses a Net Promoter Score (NPS) to rate all the SQ MS suppliers – essentially a measure of the level of satisfaction of a company’s customers and how likely they would be to recommend the company to a friend or colleague. Overall, Advion’s NPS was by far the highest of any company and 50% higher than the closest rival. In the academic sector it was a peerless 100% compared to the nearest single quadrupole mass spec vendor at 27%.  “It’s all about excellent customer support, ease-of-use, product reliability and value.” Mr. Patteson shared.

Advion Expands its Mass Spectrometry Offering to Include Undergraduate Chemistry/Biochemistry Curriculum Content

June 1, 2015 – Ithaca, NY – Advion, Inc., a leading systems and consumables developer for the life sciences industry, has launched the the expressionE compact mass spectrometer (CMS).  Created specifically for global education institutions interested in providing industry-relevant, hands-on mass spectrometry experience at an affordable price point, the expressionE delivers tailored performance, versatile sample introduction systems, and a clear, easy-to-follow, complete curriculum with a lecture and video series created by Jack Henion, PhD, an expert in mass spectrometry and co-inventor of the modern ion-spray technique.

The United States is home to more than 600 undergraduate chemistry programs recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS), and many are small private institutions, creating challenging funding environments for expensive analytical equipment. Advion has not only priced the expressionE at an affordable price, but also created an academic teaching “kit” including the most desirable chemistry, biochemistry or medicinal chemistry program features: a single quadrupole mass spectrometer, computer, training, choice of interfaces, and an easy-to-follow video and lecture curriculum.

The expressionE offers unrivaled student and faculty flexibility and versatility, enabling users to learn various sample introduction techniques including manual injection and liquid chromatography (LC). Unique to the CMS is the direct analysis probe (ASAP®), whereby students simply dip the probe into their reaction mixture and insert the probe into the mass spectrometer for immediate analysis without additional sample preparation. Or by using the Plate Express TLC/CMS interface, students can analyze a developed TLC plate without the need for scraping spots.

“Advion strives to deliver instruments specific to the chemist’s needs and we have long been aware of the need for a robust, simple mass spectrometer in chemistry teaching laboratories. The expressionE and course curriculum were created with input from a number of academic users who have a need for both the lab-based assays and the lecture course”, comments Simon Prosser, Vice President of Marketing. “We see the ability to provide hands-on, industry relevant training with mass spectrometers capable of directly analyzing liquid samples as a huge benefit to any undergraduate or graduate degree program.”

Attendees at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) Annual Meeting in Saint Louis, MO will have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the slide presentation and videos at Advion’s booth number 171.

LESA Technology to be Studied in Real-time Surgical Guidance

December 1, 2014 – Ithaca, NYAdvion, Inc. announces that its TriVersa NanoMate with liquid extraction surface analysis (LESA) capability will be evaluated as part of a study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

When coupled to a mass spectrometer, the TriVersa NanoMate with LESA capability allows for automated and direct sample analysis from samples with minimal sample preparation. The user can select tissue samples around the interest area, and get real-time mass spectral data.

Dr. Nathalie Agar, Director of the Surgical Molecular Imaging Laboratory in the Department of Neurosurgery at BWH, will work with tissue preparations for biomarker analysis to guide real-time surgical margin decisions in the operating room with a comparison to alternative modern techniques as well as traditional pathology. The purpose of the study is to determine novel markers for cancer tissue, detect them using LESA and mass spectrometry, and then guide precise and accurate surgery marginal incision start and stop points. If successful, this could increase treatment success, decrease residual cancer presence and minimize unnecessary removal of healthy tissue.

According to Advion Chief Scientific Officer, Jack Henion, PhD, “This is an exciting aspect of translational research for cancer biomarkers that potentially has immediate benefit for patients undergoing cancer surgery. In the intended workflow from ‘bench-to-bedside’ (or more accurately from ‘bench-to-operation room’) a surgical decision is guided not only by standard procedures but additionally by mass spectrometry data from tissue samples obtained in real-time during the procedure.”

Pilot experiments are now underway with an initial publication targeted for early 2015.
