Application Scientist – CMS
Hiring Range: $100,000-$120,000
The Application Scientist will provide a scientific foundation to Advion’s compact mass spectrometry product line by developing a sound understanding of the underlying single quadrupole and ambient ionization technology, customer needs and applications suitable for this product. Developing applications and performing sample preparation activities in the key areas of:
– Threat Analysis in screening situations (drugs and explosives)
– Mass spectrometry analysis of chemical reaction mixtures
– MS directed fraction collection of peptide/protein mixtures
The incumbent will also validate new components or systems, generate data for application notes,
technical literature or data packages and will communicate product operation and sample preparation techniques to customers through demonstrations, training courses, and formal presentations.
We are currently seeking an Application Scientist to join our team on-site in Ithaca, NY.
Principal Responsibilities
• Work closely with the research and engineering group to develop and test new products.
• Develop effective analytical methodology for the analysis of both small molecules and large biomolecules in various matrices.
• Generate new data by working with Advion colleagues and customers in our key application areas. Data will take the form of data packages, application notes, publications in peer reviewed journals and/or slides for oral and poster presentations at conferences.
• Interact with prospective customers to support the sales process.
• Provide onsite and telephone support and problem solving for customers experiencing sample preparation and analysis difficulties.
• Conduct on- and off-site demonstrations of the company’s products to potential customers in support of Advion’s sales and marketing efforts.
• Provide training classes for customers at Advion’s Ithaca facilities.
This position will report directly to the Senior Director of Technology.
Job Requirements
• Master’s degree (PhD preferred, post-doctoral training a plus) in analytical chemistry or in adjacent areas with concentration on modern laboratory analytical techniques (environmental sciences, food sciences, toxicology or pharmacy).
• Must possess in-depth knowledge and expertise of modern liquid chromatography (analytical or preparative scale) and mass spectrometry (single quad or other technique) and their related sample preparation techniques (e.g.LLE, SLE, SPE, crystallization, dryload).
• General knowledge of organic chemistry and mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure ionization (ESI and APCI) would be a plus.
• Experience with analytical equipment hardware and ability to troubleshoot scientific instruments as well as excellent communication and people skills is required.
• Three or more years of experience of application development or other hands-on laboratory work with HPLC-MS is desirable.
• Up to 25% overnight travel may be required (scientific conferences and workshops, working onsite with customers, prospects or collaborators). Occasional international travel as needed (<10%).
