Advantages in sensitivity and robustness for nLC

Advantages of nanoelectrospray ionization (nESI) are primarily the higher ionization efficiency and the direct interfacing with nano liquid chromatography (nLC), which itself offers significant sensitivity gains when coupled to mass spectrometry (MS).

However, nLC-nESI-MS is perceived as difficult to handle, less reliable and robust than LC-ESI-MS and hence is still primarily a research tool for proteomics with little acceptance in pharmaceutical, environmental or clinical analysis. Also, nESI generated in open sources causes a higher chemical background noise and negatively effects MS performance.

Here, we demonstrate the advantages of Chip-Mate™, a nESI ion source with controlled spray chamber environment and the ability to automatically change the spray emitter during the LC run in order to address robustness concerns related to the emitter/sprayer.
